Sugar Glider Info

Sugar glider ( Petaurus breviceps)

Sugar gliders are exotic pets that require specific needs: a large cage relative to their size, a balanced specialized diet, social interaction, bonding time, glider safe toys, knowledgeable exotic vet, regular nail trimming and lots of spoiling!  The minimum cage size is 2ft by 2ft by 3ft, but with the cage, bigger is better. They are arboreal so they need room to climb and jump and glide. The bar spacing needs to be 1/2 inch or less because they can squeeze through any larger spacing. Metal cages , homemade pvc cages, or screen cages are the most common.Interactive toys and a safe exercise wheel are essential to their well being. They also need a sleeping area, either a pouch generally made of fleece because fleece doesn’t fray, or a sleeping box ( can be wood or plastic ) with fleece blankets.

Sugar glider diet is controversial for quite a few in the glider community. My suggestion is to look up sugar glider diets in some of the links below and figure out which one works best for you and your gliders

Social interaction with other gliders as well as humans is vital for gliders. They need to be in colonies of at least two to be their happiest. Gliders can get very depressed when housed alone, they can refuse to eat or drink, over groom sometimes to the point of self mutilation. They need another glider to be able to talk to each other, they groom one another, play and sleep together. Bonding time with a human is also important. Bonding with a glider is becoming one of the colony, part of their family. Its important to earn their trust and love.

Glider safe toys can be found by many vendors, but beware not all vendors are created equal, ask around and get references. The most important toy in a gliders cage is their exercise toy, usually a wheel or treadmill made specifically for gliders. The 4 different wheels right now are Custom Choice Cruiser, Fast Track wheels & Treadmills, Raptor & Stealth. I have Custom Chioce Cruisers and Fast track wheels and Treadmills in my cages. They are so quiet and easy to clean and the gliders love them! Please stay away from the Wodent Wheel, there have been many injuries caused by this wheel, its great as a ball pit though!

A glider knowledgeable vet is essential! Research in your area for one before purchasing a glider. Gliders hide their sickness and injuries and usually only let you know last minute. Nail trimming can be done at the vet or if  you feel comfortable doing it yourself that's great! We distract with mini marshmallows when trimming nails and it works pretty well.
